Abstract
Smart cards are now used in many countries to store the health data of an individual. This is normally a personal history of medical facts and data. In addition, regulations require many jurisdictions to capture specific health data of all patients, for example, with cancer or other specific conditions. In this talk, we give a general system architecture that can take advantage of such data to support improved medical care to the individual, and also help improve the system efficiency. We will present also a case study using data mining.

About the Speaker
Professor K. Ponnambalam of the Department of Systems Design Engineering, University of Waterloo, is a member of Waterloo Institute for Health Informatics Research (WIHIR), and the Biotechnology and Health Engineering Centre (BHEC). Modeling and design of large scale systems under uncertainty is a common thread that can be found in his diverse research activities. Recently, he has been working with his collaborators in the Applied Health Sciences Faculty on the use of data mining for improving health care delivery. He has a BE (Madras), a MSc (University College, Galway), and a PhD (Toronto).
