Instructor - Trevor Strome - Healthcare Analytics, Business Intelligence, and Quality Improvement Specialist

Healthcare Organizations are under intense pressure to improve quality and patient safety, become more efficient, and maintain services and programs desired by patients. Central to these efforts are the people who must obtain, manage, and analyze data to provide the insight required by decision-makers when it’s needed and in a format most likely to be useful.

Add to these challenges the fact that misalignments between analytics capabilities and stakeholder requirements within an organization may be resulting in vastly reduced value being delivered by analytics as well as a minimal return on analytics investment across a healthcare organization.

Healthcare organizations, just trying to stay afloat in their current state, are often not in a position to review objectively how their current analytics capabilities can be enhanced to better meet the information requirements of decision-makers.

This workshop will provide the tools that will enable a healthcare organization to identify vital components within their system of analytics that can be enhanced to improve overall capability and/or value and ultimately provide the more timely, accurate, and reliable insight that decision-makers require to operate a modern healthcare organization.

  • Session 1 – Participants will review the transformation toolkit framework and scoring methodology for the value/capability matrix. Take-home exercise (to be completed by the next session) will be to complete the value/capability matrix for participants’ organization (or department/unit/etc.) to identify target areas for improvement. Participants will be provided an interactive tool to assist with scoring.

  • Session 2 – Participants will review the Transformation Project Action Plan. This is used to analyze and plan in more detail the potential improvement projects that participants can undertake to improve analytics capability and value within their organization. The take-home for this week will be to complete the guide for two or three top priority areas for improvement. This includes defining in more detail what the ideal (future) state would look like, completing a gap analysis (i.e., what needs to be done to achieve the ideal state), perform a risk assessment, and identify an action plan.

  • Session 3 – Participants will review their action plans with the instructor who will provide assistance to further refine their approach. The take-home from this week will be to select and complete at least one of the high-priority action plans within their organization. The selected action plans should have a reasonable chance of making significant progress within a two-week period.

  • Session 4 – Each of the participants will present a short summary of their project(s). Presentations should focus on how their efforts improved that particular element of analytics on the capability/value scale to demonstrate some quantitative improvement.

Testimonial

"I had the opportunity to attend the Healthcare Analytics Transformation Workshop arranged by NIHI and conducted by Trevor Strome in November 2017. This 4 part workshop series was well organized, informative and of great value. Trevor is a skilled presenter and has great knowledge of the Healthcare Analytics. His teaching style is superb and systematic. The knowledge that I have gained as part of this workshop is assisting me in working on one of major corporate initiative at our hospital. The WebEx format of the workshop makes it more accessible and cost effective. I highly recommend this workshop to people who are looking for ways and methods of taking a fresh look at their analytics activities."

Expected Outcomes

  • You will gain a useable framework for a transformational analytics system to drive evidence-informed decision-making at all levels within the healthcare organization.
  • With the framework, you will achieve the performance goals of your organization by aligning quality and performance goals from across the organization to provide actionable intelligence for healthcare executives and transformation teams using optimal data management, team development, technology implementation, and analytical techniques.

Notes about the session:
- Participants will receive copies of all the materials (including the electronic tools for the value/capability matrix, the Project Action Plan, and an electronic copy of the Analytics Toolkit book – although this will likely still be in a late-draft form!)
- Participants should have the authority and organizational support to select and undertake projects within their domain. Note that these projects don’t need to be organization-wide; there is much that can be applied to local analytics environments, as well.
- Participants must be committed to actually doing the homework each week and participating in the report-out at the end of the session.

Intended Audience

  • Healthcare leaders (CEOs, COO, CIO)
  • Healthcare managers and directors
  • Data and decision support analysts
  • Quality improvement practitioners
