Roger Cote Medal

The Roger A. Côté Medal of Excellence in Health Informatics (Côté Medal) recognizes major contributions by Canadians to the foundations or applications of Health Informatics. These contributions can include new theory or frameworks, new methodologies, innovative systems or applications, widely adopted standards, the production of cogent evidence of the value to HI-related interventions, or other contributions that have a significant impact both within and beyond Canada. The award includes the medal, a citation and a monetary prize.

NIHI has named the medal after Roger Côté to recognized and help others recognize in Canada and around the world what a significant contribution Dr. Côté has made to Health Informatics.

Candidate Criteria

The following criteria must be satisfied by all candidates for the Medal:

  • Candidates must currently be Canadian citizens or Landed Immigrants in Canada.
  • The contribution(s) by the candidate must be original and must have been published in a recognized, peer-reviewed journal, preferably an HI journal, or otherwise made accessible to open peer-review and critique.
  • The contribution(s) by the candidate must be judged to be significant by the Panel.
  • The contribution(s) by the candidate must be used and/or have had recognized impacts both widely in Canada and, preferably, globally, and only one person can receive the this award in a calendar year.

Being considered for the Côté Medal is by invitation only. Each year, the NIHI Board of Directors (BoD) invites NIHI colleagues to suggest candidates for consideration by the Panel. An arms-length Health Informatics expert panel identifies selects awardees. No colleague of NIHI management is eligible to receive the award within less than two years of sitting in such a role.
