Instructor: Dr. Don Cowan - Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Computer Science, University of Waterloo

This session covers key approaches and good practices that eHealth professionals should take in healthcare software development and deployment. Software is an integral part of healthcare delivery. As a healthcare professional, you may very well be part of an eHealth team as an informed user, analyst or developer as health care progresses toward a comprehensive eHealth system. Healthcare professionals are primarily managers, suppliers and interpreters of information as health care is predominately about the creation, management, interpretation and use of information. The information is reflected in tests, images, diagnostic and operating equipment, prescriptions and results. The interpretation of this information directs the way health care is delivered whether through people or information-driven devices such as medication carts or robots. Because of this direction, which will only increase in the future, it is important for HI, HIM, IT/IS and eHealth professionals to be aware of the essential general approaches and new advances in software development. In particular, they need to understand good practices in software development and deployment. This talk will focus on these directions and good practices.
