Allan Ryan, Director, Clinical Analytics at Alberta Health Services (AHS) leads a team 15 analysts, statisticians and data scientists who are using a combination of patient-level clinical and administrative encounter data to drive improvement in patient outcomes. Allan’s team is committed to deploying reproducible research protocols and programming in common tools such as SQL, R, and Tableau. Recent team achievements include the creation of patient-level histories of the progression of diabetes. The combination of patient-level encounter and diagnostic histories with medication histories, lab results and patient outcomes is presenting exciting new possibilities for both quality improvement and research into chronic diseases. Prior to joining AHS Allan’s career spanned academic administration, serving on the business faculty at the University of Alberta and industry work in finance and accounting. Allan’s 5 degrees include a Ph.D. in Business from Cornell and an MBA from McGill.
