Data Standards and SNOMED Series

This series looks at data standards and in particular SNOMED. It will discuss how it works. It will examine the differences between SNOMED and ICD9, ICD10 and IVC-10 CM. It will look at how and where it is being used, the challenges of deploying and using SNOMED, its impact, challenges, limitations and future.

Session 1: Introduction to SNOMED, Data Standards and Ontologies

• What is SNOMED and how did it emerge.
• What are ontologies and the UMLS Metathesaurus.
• Understanding SNOMED: how it works.
• The difference between ICD-9, ICD-10, IVD-10 CM and SNOMED.
• Examples of the use of SNOMED.

Session 2: SNOMED: Deploying and Using SNOMED: Experiences, Impact and Challenges

• The challenge of deploying and using SNOMED and the associated effort and cost.
• The deliverables of SNOMED: what difference it will make.
• Impact of Big Data Analytics.
• Experiences with SNOMED in Medicine and Nursing.
• Implementation of SNOMED in eHealth systems.

Session 3: SNOMED: Its Impact, Limitations, Vendor Challenges and Future

• The impact of SNOMED on eHealth systems, clinicians and healthcare processes.
• Limitations of SNOMED.
• EMR Vendor Issues and Challenges
• The evolution of SNOMED into the future.
