Practical Healthcare: What Professionals Working in Health Care Need to Know

Few of us have had the opportunity to study medicine or any of the other health sciences and, consequently, we often lack the vocabulary needed to understand and communicate with healthcare providers. It isn't just the words. It's understanding the healthcare system and its internal operations, appreciating the nature of clinical practice including diagnosis and treatment, and comprehending what health, wellness, disease and treatment are about. Lacking this knowledge, we are impaired in deeply understanding the challenges the system and its providers face, the constraints under which the system exists, and the patients and their needs that the healthcare system addresses.

Practical Workflow Documentation: New Methods for an Old Problem

Workflow – how work is done and information is managed – is a familiar problem. Many have used flowcharts and process maps to document work processes. However, the nature of healthcare workflow, including context-sensitivity, demands more sophisticated approaches to documentation if genuine process innovation is desired. This session introduces the concepts of static or prescribed workflow and dynamic workflow. As healthcare workflow is dynamic, the methodology for documenting context is central, and methods for capturing context are explained. Based on recent workflow research, this material will change how you do process documentation and help you produce a better result. Supportive documents will be provided with the presentation.
