New Book on The Nature of Clinical Care

For Immediate Release - Waterloo, July 11, 2024

Two of Canada’s recognized experts in Medicine, professional education, and healthcare-related research have published a new compendium of books, “The Nature of Clinical Care”, Volume 1 of which is “A Gentle Introduction”.

This first volume is an essential resource for those who work with or want to work with healthcare professionals, as well as for lay people. It is the first of three volumes, co-written by Dr. David Zitner and H. Dominic J. Covvey. Dr. Zitner is a retired family physician. He was a full professor and founding Director of the Graduate Program in Medical Informatics at Dalhousie University. Dominic Covvey is a retired full professor at the University of Waterloo, an expert in Health Informatics, and founder of the National Institutes of Health Informatics.

“This resource book explains the concepts underlying medical care” stated Dominic Covvey, President of NIHI. “It provides crucial information to healthcare workers, industry professionals, patients and others!”

David Zitner added that the book fills a critical gap for those who wish to participate in their own care. “It addresses the patient-doctor relationship, how people make diagnoses, and information about interventions, including their benefits and risks.”

“NIHI is pleased to announce this important resource.” said Shirley Fenton, Vice-President of NIHI. “It addresses the art and science of medicine, provides many helpful resources and can empower anyone who must interact with the care system and healthcare professionals.”

For more information about the book and how to obtain a copy, please visit the NIHI website, www.nihi.ca. A course based on the key concepts of the book will be offered by NIHI in the Fall of 2024.
