Mark has over 32 years of experience as a lecturer, entrepreneur, financial executive, board member, and investor at leading academic institutions, and healthcare and technology organizations.
Mark currently leads Exelerate Inc., a strategic merchant bank and advisory group specializing in corporate development, risk management, IT strategy, and M&A. He is also Managing Partner of the EXELERATE Health division, where he leads the group’s growth capital investing and innovation funding activities, focusing primarily on digital health.
He is known as an innovator in the healthcare, technology, and financial services sectors, having been focused primarily on stakeholder and community engagement, and influencing significant positive change at the Board and executive management levels in organizations.
He was recently the Executive Chairman at QHR Corporation (TSXV:QHR) where he lead the Board and management through the profitable transformation and strategic re-alignment of its healthcare businesses and ambulatory EMR solution; a process that resulted in the sale of the company to Loblaw Companies Limited for approx. $170 million. He was also the Chairman of the Audit Committee at a fintech company called, Versapay Corporation (TSXV:VPY), leading up to its sale to a private equity fund in February 2020 for approx.. $127 million. And, he also was the Chairman of Community Trust, one of Canada’s leading federally regulated Trust Companies, where he led the design of the Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERM) and the adoption of its Corporate Governance Framework, in collaboration with OSFI in Ottawa.
He has extensive experience as a financial executive at private and publicly listed growth-oriented organizations, and is currently the Chairman and CEO of Exelerate Capital Corp. (TSXV:XCAP), a Capital Pool Company, with the mandate to buy technology businesses and data privacy and cyber security organizations that enable the build out of an “Information Supply Chain™” for the healthcare sector in North America.
He also recently accepted the role as Chairman of CloudMD Software & Services Inc. (TSXV:DOC), a provider of digital health and virtual care solutions, and also an operator of primary care clinics in Canada. The company also develops AI solutions.
Mark has been an Adjunct Professor at York University (Toronto) since 2007, where he has lectured at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies and has delivered the 4th year undergraduate business case analysis, M&A, and strategy topics courses.
Mark is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant (CPA,CA), and a Certified Corporate Director (ICD.D) having obtained this designation from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. He obtained his BComm (Honours) degree from Queen’s University at Kingston, where he was awarded the D.I. McLeod Scholarship and Edyth Whyte Prize for highest standing in Economics at the University.
