Abstract
The areas of health informatics and e-health are continuing to grow and present challenging, meaningful and rewarding opportunities for co-op students and new graduates. The demand for skilled and capable professionals is high. Potential projects and other initiatives are both technical and non-technical and include e-Health and IT strategic planning, Electronic Health Record (EHR) development and deployment, change management, systems integration, project management, application/software development, data quality, business intelligence/decision support, workflow automation, privacy and security, and much more.
A career as a consultant, whether in management consulting or information technology (IT) consulting, and in any industry, presents a number of challenges and opportunities. Those considering such a career should be aware of these challenges and opportunities from the outset. Consulting is not for everyone. There are a multitude of organizations - small and large, public and private, local and international - with which one could pursue a career in health informatics (consulting or not). The presenter speaks about all of the above, as well as her past and current academic and professional pursuits.
About the Speaker
Julie Kim is a Manager of Health Business Consulting at a leading Canadian health care software and consulting firm. She has worked in the health informatics and e-health industries almost exclusively since her first co-op work term as a UW Health Studies student almost ten years ago. Since completing her undergraduate studies, Julie has held progressively senior positions at four Ontario-based consulting firms working as a management and information technology consultant with nearly twenty health care organizations across the continuum of care (including large academic health care organizations, community hospitals, and physician offices) in Ontario, British Columbia and Newfoundland & Labrador. In 2000, she was awarded COACH’s inaugural Steven Huesing Scholarship Award. Julie holds an Honours B.Sc. (Health Studies Co-op) and recently she completed her part-time studies towards a Masters of Engineering at the University of Waterloo. In September, Julie will begin Ph.D. studies at the University of Toronto while continuing to work as a consultant on a full-time basis.
