About the Speakers

Dr J. (Lisette) van Gemert-Pijnen is an Associate Professor at the University of Twente in healthcare technology. She founded and coordinates the Center for eHealth Research and Disease Management at the University of Twente (formerly www.ehealthresearchcenter.nl). Her research addresses patient care and care coordination (professionalization, cost-reductions). Her focus is on interactive technology to support disease management and/or self-care management, for example, web-based communication systems for shared care (care-management), e-coaching , e-consultation to enhance self-care and digital triage to enhance self-care and to realize cost savings.

Lisette collaborates with the University of Munster (Germany) on enhancing patient safety (an international project on infectious disease management) and with the University of Toronto (with Dr. G. Eysenbach, who is a visiting professor also at the University of Twente) in several PhD-projects about Internet-based health programs for chronic care. Lisette is a member of the scientific board of eTelemed conferences. She works with several national science institutes to develop a business model for eHealth applications for chronic care. She is a member of the board of the Dutch eHealth Society (www.nveh.nl).

Nienke Nijhof is a PhD student at the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences in the Department of Psychology and Communication of Health and Risk where she is researching technology for people with dementia. She graduated in Communication Studies at the Faculty of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Twente in 2007. She is also a project manager of Dementia & Research at Focus Cura BV. In the Netherlands, there is little research as yet into the behavioral effects of these technologies or the possible financial advantages.
