Abstract
Clinicians have to "measure" ocular appearance. This ranges from relatively straightforward judgments regarding redness, to more complex judgments involving decisions about colour, texture, shape, extent, and so forth. Over the last few years, we have examined how some of these clinical judgments are performed in order to improve on or extend our clinical tools. I will review the problem particularly as it relates to the external eye, describe our and other's research, and discuss problems and possible future directions.

Trefford Simpson, an associate professor in the School of Optometry at the University of Waterloo, received his optometric training in South Africa and his graduate training in Physiological Optics was at the University of Houston. He did post doctoral training in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. His research interests centre on using psychophysical techniques to understand the sensory processing of the ocular surface and the physiological response of the ocular surface to stimuli such as contact lens wear.
