This course explains the concepts underlying medical care. It addresses the patient-doctor relationship, how people make diagnoses and information about interventions, including their benefits and their risks. The course will be of value for participants with many different backgrounds and interests. It will be important for anyone interested in studying, evaluating, reporting on, administering, providing solutions for, or involved with or cared for by the healthcare system. Though the concepts are important, they are of a nature that everyone can understand.

The course will address topics that include: The purposes of health care; how we measure and assess the impact of health care (e.g., its benefits versus harms; what screening for undiagnosed problems is about; what diagnosis involves and how it determines the presence or absence of disease; how we interpret and use diagnostic test results and procedures; why some test results may be false alarms or give misleading reassurance; what the value, benefits and harms are of treatments, medicines and surgical procedures; how we use tests and treatments to avoid illness and maintain health.

After completing the course, you will be awarded a NIHI - McMaster CE microcredential. A micro-credential is issued in a digital format, provides details of acquired competencies, and is shareable and transportable.
